The Buffalo Promise Neighborhood (BPN) currently has three schools in Buffalo neighborhoods that were previously lacking educational resources for healthy childhood development. In partnership with EduKids, BPN is providing a second early childhood center at Gerard Place to serve students an additional 100 children ranging in age from six weeks through Pre-Kindergarten.

Trautman Associates was retained to provide A/E design services for BPN’s second Children’s Academy, co-located in the Gerard Place building, where Trautman Associates is already providing renovation design services. Because both organizations are designing renovations simultaneously, efficiencies have been worked into the project to maximize efficiency and mitigate certain costs.

For example, the costs for bringing mechanical/electrical/plumbing service to the building core and shell are being shared by both the Children’s Academy and Gerard Place. Inside the building, MEP design is tailored to the specific programming required for each space. For the Children’s Academy, electrical outlets feature protective coverings or are placed at an elevated height, plumbing fixtures are sized appropriately and mounted lower for young children, and radiant heat will be placed in the ceiling rather than the floor to provide a safe and comfortable environment.
